Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska Ends Without Ukraine Ceasefire Deal

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin left Alaska on Friday without securing an agreement for a ceasefire in Ukraine, following nearly three hours of talks in Anchorage.

In a joint appearance before reporters, the two leaders issued a short statement but declined to take questions. Trump admitted that no concrete outcome had been reached. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said, later adding: “We didn’t get there.”

While Trump described the discussions as having made “some great progress,” he offered no specifics, leaving observers uncertain about what, if anything, was achieved.

For Trump, who has styled himself as both a peacemaker and master negotiator, the lack of results represents a setback. His team had earlier suggested there was only a “25% chance of failure.” Instead, the meeting ended without a ceasefire, a timetable for further negotiations, or a commitment to include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in future talks.

The optics were also unusual: at the post-meeting statement, Putin spoke at length before Trump—an inversion of the usual dynamic in Washington press events. Though the summit was held on U.S. soil, Putin appeared more at ease, underscoring Russia’s reminder that Alaska was once part of the Russian Empire.

The absence of a breakthrough will likely be welcomed by America’s European allies and by Kyiv, who feared Trump might make unilateral concessions. Still, the summit is being portrayed as a diplomatic flop that may dent the president’s credibility both at home and abroad.

The key question now is whether Trump will follow through on his threat to impose “secondary sanctions” on Russia if it refused to move toward a ceasefire. In a later Fox News interview, he suggested such measures could come “maybe in two weeks, three weeks,” a vague timeline that may invite further scrutiny.

For now, the Alaska summit leaves the Ukraine war exactly where it was: grinding on with no ceasefire in sight and major questions about what role, if any, Trump can play in brokering peace.
