The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The declaration was made on Thursday during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, convened to pay tribute to Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital and was laid to rest on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.
President Bola Tinubu, who presided over the session, said the decision was a symbol of national gratitude and recognition of Buhari’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s public service, democracy, and military legacy.
“This is a mark of honour for his legacy and what he stood for,” Tinubu said.
He highlighted Buhari’s deep connection to the North-East region, particularly his commitment to restoring stability and security in the area during his presidency.
The renaming of the university is to be formalised by the Federal Ministry of Education, with further details expected in the coming days regarding its full implementation.
