Reps Urge FG to Strengthen Flood Control in Vulnerable Areas Nationwide

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently strengthen flood control infrastructure and bolster disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions across the country.

This followed the devastating flood incident in Mokwa, Niger State, which claimed over 500 lives, left 600 persons missing, injured more than 200, and destroyed over 4,000 houses, according to lawmakers.

The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion of urgent public importance was jointly sponsored by Hon. Joshua Audu Gana and Hon. Saba Ahmed Umaru.

Gana, while leading the debate, highlighted that Niger and Kwara States were severely hit by torrential rains in late May, which submerged farmlands and communities, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

He warned that unless proactive flood mitigation measures were implemented immediately, annual floods would continue to exact a heavy toll on lives and property.

In response, the House urged the Federal Government to take deliberate steps to improve flood response mechanisms and to provide necessary support to affected communities.

Lawmakers specifically directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver emergency relief materials, including water purification equipment, to help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases in flood-hit areas.

Gana commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who donated N2 billion through Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State, who also contributed N1 billion. He also acknowledged the efforts of NGOs and private donors in bringing relief to survivors.

The House stressed that more needed to be done to prevent future occurrences and ensure that Nigerians in flood-prone areas are adequately protected.
