Aregbesola Takes Helm as ADC Interim Secretary, Pledges to Rebuild Party on Ideals

Former Minister of Interior and ex-Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has officially resumed office as the interim national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring a bold vision to transform the party into a principled, people-centred political force.

Speaking during his acceptance speech on Tuesday, July 1, Aregbesola described his appointment by the National Opposition Coalition Group as a turning point in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

“This party will stand for something. It will not be a mere vehicle for opportunism or personal ambition, but a living institution built on values, guided by ideals, and accountable to the people,” he asserted.

Aregbesola took aim at Nigeria’s prevailing political culture, criticizing what he called the ideological emptiness of most political parties.

“Our political landscape is plagued by parties that are nothing but empty shells. They merge and split not over ideas or policies, but personalities and power. That is not the kind of party I will serve,” he declared.

He pledged to rebuild the ADC into a disciplined, visionary, and inclusive institution, stressing the need for internal democracy, transparency, and consistent engagement with citizens beyond election cycles.

“We must become an institution where internal democracy is not just preached but practiced; where youth, women, workers, and professionals have real voices, not token seats,” Aregbesola said.

Drawing inspiration from successful party models in South Africa, Sweden, and Chile, he said the ADC would adapt global best practices to Nigeria’s socio-political context in order to build a credible opposition that prioritises governance, not just elections.

He concluded with a passionate call for reform, urging party members to join him in restoring public trust in politics and committing to service.

“Politics must return to its rightful place as a service to the people. Long live our party. Long live our democracy. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Aregbesola said.
