Ganduje: One-Party State Is Fine If Nigerians Want It

Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is heading toward a one-party state.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Ganduje countered concerns by stating that if Nigerians choose to shift towards APC dominance, it shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

He explained, “A one-party state isn’t forced; it happens through negotiation and other political parties recognizing the positive outcomes of our governance. If they decide to join, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Ganduje also pointed to China as an example, noting, “China is one of the world’s strongest nations with a one-party system. We’re not necessarily aiming for that, but if that’s what Nigerians desire, we won’t oppose it.”

During the meeting, Ganduje, accompanied by three PDP senators from Kebbi State who are planning to defect to the APC, sought President Tinubu’s blessing for their move.

“Discussions took place behind the scenes, and now the three PDP senators from Kebbi have made up their minds to join the APC,” Ganduje revealed. He reassured that the defection process would be smooth, with the official announcement expected in the Senate by Tuesday.

On the growing influx of opposition members into APC, Ganduje highlighted the constitutional clarity on the matter, adding, “Our political expertise in managing these transitions is evident.”

He further addressed the potential impact of numerous political parties, warning, “Too many cooks spoil the soup; too many political parties disrupt governance.”
