Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has addressed the controversy surrounding the appointment of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, son of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, as the Commissioner for Health in the state. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Idahosa revealed that Senator Adams Oshiomhole opposed his son’s appointment, emphasizing that the decision was based solely on merit and the qualifications of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole.
Idahosa defended the appointment, describing Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole as a highly qualified medical professional. “Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He studied here in Nigeria and went to the United States to further his studies. He has everything it takes to be in the cabinet,” Idahosa stated. He dismissed any suggestions that the appointment was influenced by Senator Oshiomhole, reiterating that Cyril’s competence made him an ideal candidate for the role.
The deputy governor also responded to claims that the appointment might amount to “state capture,” a term previously used by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Idahosa refuted the suggestion, clarifying that Senator Oshiomhole had actually opposed the decision. He emphasized that the governor, Monday Okpebholo, chose to include Dr. Cyril in his cabinet based on his vision for improving the state’s healthcare system, not due to familial ties.
“This position has nothing to do with Adams. In short, Adams didn’t want it; he went against it. But the governor, because of the vision he wants for the people of Edo, made up his mind to have Dr. Cyril in our cabinet,” Idahosa concluded.
Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole’s appointment, which followed Governor Okpebholo’s inauguration, had sparked public debate. However, the state government has defended the decision, stating that it aligns with the administration’s goals for advancing Edo’s healthcare sector.
