Former President Donald Trump is pushing back against claims that he had “as many as seven” phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin after leaving office and that he secretly sent Putin a COVID-19 testing kit while still president.
The allegations come from journalist Bob Woodward’s upcoming book, “War”, as reported by “The Washington Post” and CNN. According to the book, an anonymous Trump aide claimed Trump maintained contact with Putin following his departure from the White House.
Woodward also wrote that during the pandemic, when COVID-19 tests were scarce, Trump sent a testing kit to Putin for his personal use. The book alleges that after receiving the kit, Putin asked Trump to keep the gesture private, reportedly saying, “I don’t want you to tell anybody because people will get mad at you, not me.”
Trump has strongly denied the claims. Speaking to ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Trump called the allegations “false” and dismissed Woodward as “a storyteller” who had “lost his marbles.”
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, also issued a statement rejecting the reports, calling them “made-up stories” and accusing Woodward of being “truly demented and deranged.” Cheung emphasized that Trump had given Woodward “absolutely no access” for the book.
