Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his 20-year-old stepson were victims of a “gang assault” on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, according to authorities. The attack occurred around 8:35 p.m. on Friday near 96th Street and 2nd Avenue, following a “verbal altercation” with five suspects. The NYPD confirmed that the suspects had a previous interaction with the stepson.

During the assault, the suspects struck both Paterson, 70, and his stepson in the face and body. Despite the violent encounter, the pair managed to fend off the attackers, who then fled on foot. Paterson and his stepson were taken to the hospital in stable condition and have since been released.

Paterson, a Democrat, served as New York’s first African American and legally blind governor from 2008 to 2010. A spokesperson for Paterson expressed gratitude for the quick police response and the support they’ve received, while urging people not to exploit the incident for personal or political purposes.

Paterson’s spokesperson added that the former governor is primarily focused on the New York Mets’ performance and pitcher Kodai Senga, and promised to provide any further updates if necessary.
