Three Dead, 15 Injured in Shanghai Walmart Stabbing Rampage

Three people were killed and 15 others injured in a stabbing rampage at a Walmart supermarket in Shanghai on Monday night.

Chinese police arrested a 37-year-old man, identified only by his surname Lin, at the scene. Authorities stated that Lin had traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger due to a personal economic dispute.” The incident occurred in Songjiang, a densely populated district in the city’s southwest that is home to several universities.

According to police, the three victims died from their injuries after being transported to the hospital. The 15 injured individuals are expected to survive as their wounds are not life-threatening.

“There was blood everywhere,” an eyewitness said. Shi, who operates a jewelry store on the ground floor of the Ludu International Commercial Plaza, described how dozens of firefighters and SWAT officers rushed into the mall, urging people to evacuate. “I didn’t know what was happening, but suddenly, I saw people running in a panic,” he said. “No one had ever experienced something like this… it was terrifying.”

Discussions about the incident have since been censored on Chinese social media. While the Walmart reopened on Tuesday, additional security measures were put in place.

Though firearms are banned in China, the country has experienced a number of knife attacks recently. Last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student died after being stabbed near his school in southern China, and in June, four American college instructors were stabbed in Jilin. Another attack in May saw two people killed and 21 others wounded at a hospital in Yunnan.
