Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Appeals for His Release in Honor of Late Igbo Leader

The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has made a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to release Kanu in tribute to the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away in July 2024 and is scheduled for burial on November 2.

In a statement from Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Kanu’s brother, the family emphasized that granting Kanu’s release would serve as a profound respect for the late Igbo leader. They also called upon South East governors and other stakeholders to unite in their efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom, demonstrating genuine leadership.

The family pointed out the recent recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from Kanu’s trial as an opportunity for a political resolution. They noted that the judge’s refusal to adhere to Supreme Court directives has led to international embarrassment for Nigeria.

Prince Kanu urged President Tinubu to extend the same fairness that resulted in the release of Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba self-determination leader, asserting that Kanu’s freedom would help address the ongoing marginalization of the Igbo people. He further called for the implementation of the “Three Rs” Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Restoration to heal the wounds of the Nigerian Civil War and ensure justice for the Igbo community.

The statement also appealed to traditional and religious leaders to come together and take collective action, affirming that Kanu’s aspirations are not for political power but for the development of Biafra land with equal opportunities for all.
