Severe floods and landslides in Nepal have claimed the lives of at least 100 people, with dozens still missing following two days of torrential rainfall, officials reported on Sunday. The heavy downpours have inundated areas around the capital, Kathmandu, leaving many stranded on rooftops and prompting rescue operations by raft. Thousands of homes near rivers have been submerged, and key highways remain blocked.

Despite forecasts predicting more rain until Tuesday, some signs of relief were seen on Sunday. So far, over 3,000 people have been rescued, according to a government spokesperson. However, flash floods and landslides have taken a devastating toll.

In Bhaktapur, east of Kathmandu, a landslide collapsed a house, killing five people, including a pregnant woman and a four-year-old girl, state media reported. Meanwhile, two bodies were recovered from a bus buried by a landslide in Dhading, west of the capital, with 12 passengers aboard.

Tragedy struck a football training center in Makwanpur, where six players were killed by a landslide. Elsewhere, in the southern Kathmandu valley, four people were swept away by the Nakkhu River as onlookers watched helplessly.

Jitendra Bhandari, an eyewitness, described the horrifying scene: “For hours, they kept on pleading for help. We could do nothing.”

Hari Om Malla, a truck driver in Kathmandu, recounted how water flooded his vehicle’s cabin as the rain intensified on Friday night. “We jumped out and swam to safety, but my purse, bag, and mobile were washed away by the river. I have nothing now,” Malla said. “We spent the entire night in the cold.”
