Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has urged residents to remain calm following the outcome of the recent governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner, who received 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party followed with 22,761 votes.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Obaseki expressed concerns regarding what he termed a “blatant disregard for processes and the rule of law” during the election. He acknowledged the frustration felt by many Edo citizens who believe the election was mishandled and its outcome unjust. He urged those dissatisfied with the results to pursue legal channels rather than resort to violence.

“The essence of democracy lies in the power of the people to choose their leaders. When this power is taken away, it undermines democracy,” Obaseki remarked. He encouraged residents to maintain peace and reassured them that “peace and justice will prevail.”

The governor emphasized the availability of legal mechanisms to address grievances and urged the people of Edo State to continue their lawful activities while the issues are being resolved.
