The FBI is investigating what it has described as an “attempted assassination” of former President Donald Trump after Secret Service agents opened fire on a man armed with an AK-47 near Trump’s Palm Beach, Florida, golf course on Sunday.
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who is believed to have connections to North Carolina and Hawaii. Florida authorities have detained Routh, and charges are expected to be filed in the coming days, according to sources.
Investigators are exploring whether Routh’s actions were motivated by grievances related to Ukraine and frustrations with Trump’s stance on the issue. A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign confirmed the former president was unharmed and “safe.”
This incident follows a prior attack on Trump, where he was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, two months ago.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated that Routh came within 300 to 500 yards of the former president before being spotted by Secret Service agents, who fired four to six rounds at him. The suspect dropped his weapon and fled. It remains unclear if Routh aimed the rifle directly at Trump.
Sources told news agents that Secret Service agents noticed the suspect’s AK-47 through a fence and opened fire. Three shell casings believed to be from the suspect’s weapon were recovered, but it’s unclear if he discharged the rifle during the incident.
Trump was immediately moved to a secure location on the golf course following the gunfire. After fleeing, Routh was tracked by his vehicle’s license plate, apprehended, and taken into custody. Authorities discovered two backpacks at the scene containing a GoPro camera and ceramic tiles, along with the AK-47-style rifle.
Sheriff Bradshaw explained that Trump’s security detail was more limited because he is no longer the sitting president, though future visits may see enhanced security measures around the golf course.
