Federal Government and ASUU Report Progress Amid Strike Concerns

Amid looming strike threats from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), signs of progress emerged after weekend negotiations between the federal government and the union. ASUU had issued a 21-day strike notice on August 19, following its NEC meeting at the University of Ibadan, over unmet demands.

In an effort to prevent the strike, both parties met last week and formed a sub-committee to review ASUU’s demands, with an agreement to reconvene on September 6 for further discussions.

Speaking on Friday, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, commended the progress made toward revitalizing the education sector. According to Boriowo Folasade, the ministry’s director of press and public relations, the joint committee has made strides in addressing critical issues through collaborative efforts, although more work is needed to finalize resolutions.
