Kano is embroiled in confusion following conflicting court orders regarding the status of the Emir of Kano.

A Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the police to evict Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano. This ruling came barely an hour after a Kano High Court issued an order preventing the police, the Department of State Services, and the military from evicting the reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The Federal High Court’s directive, granted by Justice S.A. Amobeda on Tuesday, was based on a motion filed by the deposed Emir Aminu Bayero on May 27, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Kano High Court case was filed by Muhammadu Sanusi II and four key Kano kingmakers: Madakin Kano Yusuf Nabahani, Makaman Kano Ibrahim Sarki Abdullahi, Sarkin Bai Mansur Adnan, and Sarkin Dawaki Maituta Bello Tuta.

The Federal High Court’s orders include:

“Restraining the respondents from inviting, arresting, detaining, threatening, intimidating, or harassing the applicant, and from infringing on his rights pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion.”

“Preventing the respondents from denying the applicant the use of his official residence and palace at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, and from evicting anyone residing there illegally until the originating summons is determined.”

“Granting the bailiff permission to serve the 3rd and 4th respondents through the 5th respondent at the Police Headquarters, Kano Command, and the 6th and 7th respondents through their Kano offices.”

Justice Amobeda highlighted that the order was made in the interest of justice and to maintain peace in Kano State. An expedited hearing of the suit was also ordered, with respondents required to file their processes within 72 hours of service.
