APC Labels Atiku-Obi Meeting as “Desperate Alliance”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the recent meeting between Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, as a sign of “unity through mutual desperation.”
Following their meeting last week, there has been increasing speculation about a potential coalition aimed at challenging the APC’s dominance in the 2027 elections. This potential coalition has raised concerns among several APC chieftains, who view it as a significant threat if it materializes.
However, the APC, in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed the meeting as a reflection of Atiku and Obi’s opportunistic ambitions. Morka described their political moves as a “restless drift” in search of convenient party platforms for their presidential aspirations, which he characterized as self-indulgent.
Morka questioned the stability of their potential alliance, speculating whether Obi would rejoin the PDP, if Atiku might leave the PDP for the Labour Party, or if both would abandon their current parties for a new political formation, such as the proposed mega party by Professor Pat Utomi. He dismissed Utomi’s mega party as an unrealistic option lacking the structure to accommodate both leaders.
According to Morka, Atiku and Obi are driven by a shared desperation to become President of Nigeria, rather than by genuine political vision or commitment. He contrasted their ambitions with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which he described as focused on transformative governance for the nation.
