In a meeting held on Friday in Kaduna, the nineteen Northern governors collectively donated N180 million to support the victims of the Kaduna airstrike accident, which resulted in the loss of over 80 lives and left numerous others injured.
Inuwa Yahaya, the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, conveyed the donation on behalf of the governors, emphasizing their commitment to assisting the victims and the Kaduna State government.
The Gombe governor extended prayers for comfort to the affected individuals and the state government, expressing condolences for the lives lost.
“Your excellencies and colleagues, distinguished members of the press, as you can see, we are presenting our support to the victims of Tundun Biri [accident] and the Kaduna state government to further support them,” the chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum Inuwa Yahaya said
“On behalf of the Northern Governors’ Forum, we hereby make this donation so that the government of Kaduna State will use it to support the victims,” the Gombe governor said.
The governors also advocated for adequate compensation for the victims, echoing a similar donation made by lawmakers from the region in the weeks following the tragic incident.
Presidential Action: Investigation Launched into Kaduna Air Mishap
The recent Kaduna air mishap adds to a series of military accidents in Nigeria. Initial confusion surrounded the incident, with the Nigerian Navy denying involvement, while the Nigerian Army claimed responsibility.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) visited the site, apologized for the regrettable development, and accepted responsibility. President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani have both ordered a probe to determine the causes and prevent future occurrences.
Vice President Kashim Shettima visited victims at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, emphasizing the government’s commitment to punishing those responsible. Shettima confirmed President Tinubu’s directive for a thorough investigation, expecting a prompt report.
Meanwhile, rights organizations are urging a review of the country’s military rules of engagement, challenging the incident.
