President Bola Tinubu has suspended the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele with immediate effect.
Emefiele has been ordered to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms. A statement from the Federal Ministry of Information reads:
PRESIDENT TINUBU SUSPENDS EMEFIELE FROM OFFICE AS CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect. This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.

Earlier this year before the general election Tinubu had urged then-president Muhammadu Buhari to suspend Emefiele due to the bad execution of a new naira policy believed to be targeted at preventing politicians particularly Bola Tinubu from influencing voters’ choices through monetary means, the implementation of the policy then resulted in chaos and widespread hardship throughout the country.
