May 27: Nigeria Celebrates Children’s Day

Children are the most innocent beings that can bring a smile to one’s face. Children are one of the most precious possessions in the world and are loved by all. Thus, the reason Children’s Day is celebrated to commemorate the healthy growth and happiness of children.
In several countries, the celebration is held on various days. It is annually observed on May 27 in Nigeria and is intended to celebrate children everywhere and to help adults remember their own early childhoods.
It is stated that children are gifts from God. The child’s gender, physical make-up, or condition are irrelevant. These children will influence many generations to come.
Though it is not a general public holiday in Nigeria, the day is set aside to honour the younger generation and, thus, primary and secondary children are given a day off from school.
Children’s Day aims to recognise the rights of all minors and children to health, education, and protection in addition to the fun and celebrations around it.
On Children’s Day, a variety of social activities are carried out, including excursions, parties, fairs, parades, etc.
The majority of these events takes place in unique venues like stadiums, amusement parks, and other popular spots.
On this day, parents celebrate their children by giving them gifts, taking them on outings, and treating them to something special.
Brief Origin
In 1925, International Children’s Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare. Since 1950, it is celebrated on June 1 in most Communist and post-Communist countries. Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20 to commemorate the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1959. In some countries, it is Children’s Week and not Children’s Day.
Observing Children’s Day Varies By Country.
Even though the United Nations designated November 20 as Children’s Day, different countries observe the celebration on different dates.
In Nigeria, May 27 is celebrated as Children’s Day. Children’s Day is observed in China on June 1 whereas it is observed in Japan on May 5 and in the United Kingdom on August 20.
