Former head coach of Belgium’s national team, Roberto Martinez, will now serve in the same capacity for Portugal’s national squad.
The information was shared on the Facebook page maintained by the Portuguese Football Federation yesterday. The message was accompanied by a photograph of the Spaniard with the following caption: “A new Leader at the service of Portugal: welcome, Mister Roberto Martinez!”
Martinez, 49, resigned as Belgium’s coach after being eliminated in the World Cup group stage in Qatar. He takes over from Fernando Santos, who Portugal to the Euro 2016 victory and the first UEFA Nations League title in 2019. The former Everton head coach, responsible for managing a plethora of stars during his time with Belgium, will have an even more difficult time with Portugal, who parade some of the most famous players in world football. These players include captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernado Silva, amongst others.
