Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has directed the state’s education taskforce to immediately seal illegal schools operating in the state, while the proprietors are to be arrested and prosecuted in line with the relevant laws of the state.
The action, according to the governor, became vital to safeguard free, functional, and compulsory education at the basic level.
Speaking on behalf of the governor in Uyo, the commissioner for information and strategy, Comrade Iniobong Ememobong, said the state government was worried about the proliferation of illegal and substandard schools, adding that such unwholesome practice was unacceptable.
“To guarantee the right of every child to quality education in a secure and safe environment, the government has commenced a clamp down on illegal schools in the state.
“Proprietors found operating schools shall be duly prosecuted. To this end, all schools operating without approval are strongly advised to shut down as the 2022/2023 academic session begins on 12th September 2022,” he warned, adding that the future of children must not be sacrificed on the altar of cheap education, given the fact that free and compulsory education is currently operational in the state.
