Amaechi Loses Supreme Court Case Over N96b Fraud

Rotimi Amaechi
Rotimi Amaechi, a presidential aspirant in 2023, has lost a plea to have an inquiry launched against him by the Rivers State administration, led by Nyesom Wike, over an alleged N96 billion fraud.

This comes as the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Amaechi’s lawsuit challenging the formation of a seven-man inquiry panel against his government as frivolous.

It will be recalled that Amaechi had approached the Supreme Court to try and stop Governor Wike from proceeding with the seven-man Commission of Inquiry already put in place to probe some transactions estimated at about N96billion carried out by the Rivers State Government under Amaechi during his eight-year tenure as the State Governor.

He was alleged to have fraudulently sold some assets belonging to the State during his tenure.

The apex court also fined the former Minister of Transportation, who just quit to pursue his presidential ambitions in 2023, N1 million in costs.

Some of the assets are Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel and the award of contract for the execution of Mono Rail Project.

The supreme court, however, ruled on Friday that the investigative panel, led by Justice George Omekeji, can proceed.

Amaechi’s action against the inquiry panel in the High Court of Rivers State and the Court of Appeal had already been dismissed.
