Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced on Thursday in a meeting with Barcelona mayoress Ada Colau that the club will play at the Montjuic during the 2023-24 season.
Laporta disclosed that work will begin at Camp Nou in June and will not finish until the 2025-26 season. Barcelona are preparing to begin work on remodeling the Camp Nou. Barca president, Joan Laporta, had a meeting this Thursday with Ada Colau, the mayoress of Barcelona, to talk about the Espai Barca project. After this meeting, both talked to the media to announce the good news. Work will begin in June, with special emphasis on the first and second stadium and the area around the stadium.
“The redevelopment work at the Camp Nou, the epicenter of Espai Barca, will begin this month in June, just when the season ends following the license approved this morning by the local council,” part of Barca’s statement reads.
Laporta told the media that this means Barca will play at the Montjuic Stadium during the 2023-24 campaign.
“In principle, we will only be at the Montjuic Stadium for one season, from June 2023 to June 2024. It’s possible that we will not return to Camp Nou until September 2024. But that would only be if the planning of that third stand gets a bit delayed. In principle, we should be back at the Camp Nou in June.”
Ada Colau also spoke about the move to the Montjuic: “We have to speak about how to make this move. We’ll have to see everyone. We’ll have to finish off the plans and then decide later on. This Thursday, we are announcing this agreement for the transformation of Espai Barca. This collaboration has come about after the project’s approval.
Likewise, Barcelona announced that the demolition of the third stand will not take place until next year, due to the economic impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“There has been a change in the plan because of the war in Ukraine, because of the price of products. To reduce risks, the new third stand will not be carried out until we move to the Montjuic. We think that this will not make us waste lots of time,” Laporta said.
Barca plans to return to Camp Nou for the 2024-25 season, but at 50% capacity. In the 2024-25 campaign, Camp Nou will be at around 50% capacity and then in 2025-26, once work is completed, it will be 100% again,” he concluded.
