Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has stated that zoning is not a Nigerian problem, following the uproar over the zone to generate presidential candidates in 2023.
Nigerians, he said, should demand the best hands to run the country. Ortom stated that the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, will respond to Nigerians’ demand for the best hands to lead the country.
“I have always stated that zoning is good, but it is driven by the marginalization of people and also the amount of poverty among the people,” the governor said as he arrived in Makurdi from Abuja.
“Some people tend to believe that if you zone a position to their place they may have the opportunity of getting their share of the cake. “But beyond that, if you look at America from where we borrowed the presidential system of government, you will recall that they don’t zone. George Bush was President of America, at a point two of his sons were governors. One of his sons became the President of the country.
“So it doesn’t matter. You look for the best hands and that is what we are getting to do. Some of us are also looking at where we will look for somebody who will lead us at the party level and even at the presidential level.’’
“I feel that this is how all Nigerians are thinking as a result of the recent challenge we’ve faced from the north and south. Governors from the South and the North had opposing opinions on what should happen next.
“You would understand me if you pay close attention to what Nigerians are saying,” Nigerians argue that zoning is not a Nigerian problem and that we should seek the best solution. We require someone who is dependable.”
