7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Myanmar and Thailand, Over 1,000 Dead

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Southeast Asia on Friday, causing widespread devastation across Myanmar and Thailand, with the death toll rising rapidly as rescue operations continue.

The quake’s epicenter was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, but the tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, nearly 600 miles away. Authorities say dozens of buildings collapsed across the region, including a skyscraper under construction in the Thai capital.

In Myanmar, the state-run MRTV broadcaster reported at least 1,002 fatalities, with 2,376 people injured and 30 still missing. Emergency services are conducting search-and-rescue operations in areas where buildings have collapsed or been heavily damaged.

In Thailand, the Royal Thai Police confirmed that nine people were killed and nine more injured after a high-rise building under construction collapsed in Bangkok. More than 100 workers remain unaccounted for, with crews working urgently to find survivors.

The earthquake is one of the most powerful to strike the region in recent years. Rescue teams from both countries have been deployed, and international aid offers are beginning to arrive.

Officials warn the death toll is expected to rise as emergency teams reach more remote and severely affected areas.
