Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke has promised to reduce the price of petrol to about N300 per litre if elected president in 2027.
Duke, a former governor of Cross River State, made the pledge during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday.
Asked what the price of petrol would be under his administration, Duke said he would target a pump price of about N300 per litre.
“I’ll try and bring it to about N300,” the former governor said.
He acknowledged that the figure might appear unrealistic but said his proposal was based on what he described as a straightforward calculation involving Nigeria’s crude oil production.
“I’ve told you, it sounds so outlandish, but I’ve given you the arithmetic.
“Allocate 600,000 barrels, if that’s what you consume daily. Allocate that to yourself. The other one million, you can sell.”
Duke’s proposal comes amid continued criticism from opposition presidential candidates over President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy in 2023, a policy that was followed by a sharp increase in fuel prices and higher costs of goods and services.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, said in August that he would restore the petrol subsidy if elected in 2027.
Atiku argued that the Federal Government had failed to account for the savings from subsidy removal, saying the policy could have been justified if the funds had been channelled into development projects.
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), also said in September that his administration would restore the subsidy after tackling corruption.
However, Obi had previously supported the removal of the subsidy. Speaking at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) 2026 conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he argued that the current administration’s alleged mismanagement of the gains from subsidy removal was not sufficient reason to reinstate it.
