Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the restoration of peace in Rivers State after months of bitter political conflict.
Speaking late Thursday night following a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Wike said all parties involved had resolved their differences and agreed to work together. The meeting was convened by President Bola Tinubu and included suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, whose power struggle had plunged the state into turmoil.
The crisis, which stemmed from a battle for control between Wike and Fubara, had intensified into legal disputes, threats of impeachment, and a constitutional crisis. In March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending the governor, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) was appointed interim administrator to stabilize the situation.
After the peace talks, Wike described the resolution as a family reconciliation.
“We are members of the same political family. Just like in every family, disagreements can arise, but today, we’ve reached an agreement to settle our issues. There’s no more acrimony,” he told journalists.
Governor Fubara also confirmed the truce and pledged to uphold peace.
“With the help of President Tinubu and the cooperation of our leaders, peace has returned to Rivers. We will do everything within our power to sustain it this time around,” he said.
The agreement marks a turning point in a crisis that had threatened governance and stability in one of Nigeria’s most economically vital states.
