The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka in Lagos has increased its undergraduate students’ tuition fees.
Following a meeting with the senior management team, the UNILAG branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) issued a statement on Thursday that included this information.
The statement claims that the institution’s management raised the tuition for students offering programs that do not call for a laboratory and studio from N19,000 to N100,750.
According to the statement, the new tuition is N190,250 for medical students and N140,250 for those taking courses that include lab and studio work.
According to SSANU, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, met with representatives of the three non-academic staff unions on Thursday, July 20th to discuss issues concerning members welfare.
The union, in the statement, said Ogunsola stated that fees would be increased for UNILAG undergraduate students.
“During the meeting, the proposed fees for undergraduate students of UNILAG were disclosed. Students without lab and studio use will pay N100,750, those with lab use will pay N140,250, and the college of medicine would pay N190,250,” the statement said.
Rasaki Yusuf, a representative of the SSANU at the meeting, reportedly requested a rebates for staff employees who have children as students in the university.
However, the vice chancellor claimed that the new fees were set nationwide and could not be altered for certain group students.
Ogunsola offered the staff the option of paying in installments, but with the requirement that they complete payment one month before to the final exams.
