Trump Calls for Fed Governor Lisa Cook to Resign Amid Mortgage Fraud Allegation

President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, citing allegations of potential mortgage fraud.

“Cook must resign, now!!!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, linking to a Bloomberg article about the claims.

The controversy stems from a letter dated August 15 sent to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte. In it, Pulte accused Cook of falsifying bank documents and property records to secure more favorable loan terms, behavior the letter described as “potentially committing mortgage fraud.”

In a statement to ABC News, Cook said she first learned of the allegations through media reports. She dismissed calls for her resignation as politically motivated but pledged transparency.

“I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet,” Cook said. “I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and am gathering accurate information to provide the facts.”

Trump has frequently attacked the Federal Reserve, particularly Chair Jerome Powell, whom he has derided as “too late Powell,” a “stubborn mule,” and a “numbskull” for his handling of interest rates. Cook, nominated by President Joe Biden in 2022, became the first Black woman to serve on the Fed’s Board of Governors. Her term runs until January 2038.

Her removal could open another seat for Trump to fill. Earlier this month, Adriana Kugler announced her resignation from the board, giving the president an unexpected appointment opportunity. Trump has since nominated Stephen Miran to temporarily serve, pending Senate confirmation, which could place him on the board before its September meeting.
