President-elect Donald Trump has announced that billionaire Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at overhauling federal operations.
In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, “Together, these two wonderful Americans will help my administration dismantle government bureaucracy, cut unnecessary regulations, reduce wasteful spending, and reform federal agencies.”
The Department of Government Efficiency will function outside the formal federal structure, partnering with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to provide guidance on “structural government reform,” according to Trump. Details on funding for the new department were not provided.
“I look forward to Elon and Vivek focusing on efficiency and making life better for all Americans,” Trump said, noting that the department would address “massive waste and fraud” within the federal government’s $6.5 trillion budget.
During his campaign, Trump indicated Musk would play a role in his administration, previously announcing Musk would lead a task force to conduct a full audit of the federal government and recommend “drastic reforms.”
Musk, following Trump’s remarks, expressed his willingness to serve, stating on X, “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises.”
Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur who ended his own presidential bid in January, has been a strong supporter of Trump’s vision. He recently called on Democrats to support Trump’s efforts, emphasizing that Trump aims to be “a president for all Americans.”
