Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce addressed growing speculation about his future following the team’s Christmas night loss to the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos defeated the Chiefs 20–13 on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. With starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes and backup Gardner Minshew sidelined by knee injuries, Kelce played alongside third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun. According to ESPN, Kelce finished the game with five receptions for 36 yards.
The loss comes amid widespread discussion over whether Kelce will retire at the end of the season. He fueled that speculation during a pregame interview with former NFL star Tony Gonzalez on Prime Video.
Kelce said he remains motivated but emphasized that any decision about his future must be carefully considered.
“I’ve got to make the right decision for me,” Kelce said, adding that a return would also depend on the Chiefs’ interest. “If I do want to come back, I’ve got to hope the Chiefs are willing to bring me back. It’s a two-way street.”
For now, Kelce said his focus remains on finishing the season strong.
“At this point in the year, I’m just trying to finish out and give Chiefs Kingdom everything I’ve got,” he said. “Go out there and do it with some of that flair.”
Kelce also said he has sought advice from his brother, Jason Kelce, who retired in 2024 after a 13-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as others who have faced similar decisions.
“I’m asking myself, what was it for you that helped you find that answer?” Kelce said.
Gonzalez, who retired from the NFL in 2013, praised Kelce’s career and spoke about the opportunities ahead of him.
“You’re one of the greatest tight ends of all time,” Gonzalez said. “You’ve won Super Bowls, you’ve been an All-Pro, you’ve done things off the field, and you’ve got plenty waiting for you after football. The sky’s the limit for your next chapter.”
