President Bola Tinubu is prioritizing economic reforms and shared prosperity for Nigerians rather than the 2027 presidential election, the presidency has said.
Amid ongoing discussions among opposition leaders to form a coalition against Tinubu in 2027, presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare emphasized that the president is more concerned about delivering results than political competition.
“President Tinubu is not worried about the next election,” Dare stated. “He’s focused on how the reforms he has implemented will positively impact Nigerians and the economy.”
Dare highlighted key economic indicators, including rising foreign reserves, declining inflation, increased trade surplus, and over $50 billion in attracted investments, as signs of progress under Tinubu’s leadership.
Meanwhile, opposition figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), are working on an alliance. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed also confirmed ongoing talks after a closed-door meeting with Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi.
Despite these developments, the presidency maintains that Tinubu’s priority remains economic transformation.
“At the end of his first term, he wants to look back and say, ‘I have impacted the lives of Nigerians. I have turned this economy around,’” Dare added.
