President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 18 and 19. The event, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will bring together global leaders to address urgent international challenges.
This year’s summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on combating global poverty and hunger, transitioning to sustainable energy, and fostering development. Tinubu’s presence follows an invitation from President Lula, who holds the G20 presidency. Nigeria’s participation will highlight Tinubu’s advocacy for reforms in global governance, with a particular emphasis on the country’s longstanding bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
“Nigeria has consistently championed reforms of global governing institutions, presenting its robust credentials for a permanent UNSC seat,” said Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. Beyond engaging in summit discussions, Tinubu is set to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, focusing on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic priorities in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
The President will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including:
– Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs
– Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development
– Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity
– Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security
– Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria upon the summit’s conclusion.
