Taylor Swift Cancels Vienna Concerts Due to Security Threat

Three Taylor Swift concerts scheduled to take place in Vienna this week have been cancelled due to a potential security threat. The shows, part of Swift’s highly anticipated Eras tour, were set for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Ernst Happel Stadium.

The decision to cancel came after Austrian authorities arrested two individuals on Wednesday on suspicion of planning attacks inspired by the Islamic State group targeting large events in the capital.

In a statement, the concert organizers said: “Following confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three planned shows for everyone’s safety.” They added that all tickets would be automatically refunded within 10 working days.

Earlier, Austria’s General Director for Public Security, Franz Ruf, announced that a 19-year-old Austrian citizen had been arrested in Ternitz, Lower Austria, on Wednesday morning. A second suspect was apprehended in Vienna later in the day, though no further details were provided.

According to Ruf, the two suspects had become radicalized online, with the 19-year-old reportedly pledging allegiance to the Islamic State in early July. A significant police operation in Ternitz led to the evacuation of several nearby homes as authorities searched the suspect’s residence, where they found chemical substances that are now being analyzed.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed his disappointment over the cancellations in a post on X, calling it a “bitter disappointment for all fans,” but emphasized that the situation was “very serious.” He credited the early detection and swift action of law enforcement and security agencies with preventing a potential tragedy.

Vienna police chief Gerhard Pürstl noted that 65,000 people were expected to attend each concert, with an additional 22,000 fans gathering outside the venue.

Investigations are ongoing.

For fans like Molly Surette from Leeds, UK, the cancellation is heartbreaking. She had been eagerly anticipating Saturday’s show for over a year. “We were making friendship bracelets to swap with other fans during the tour when we heard the news,” she told the BBC. “There’s been so much building up to this concert, and now it’s gone. I’m devastated, but I’m glad everyone is hopefully going to be safe.”
