Tariff Rift Sparks Trump Endorsement Reversal in Colorado Race

President Donald Trump on Saturday withdrew his endorsement of Republican Rep. Jeff Hurd of Colorado, citing the congressman’s opposition to his tariff policies, and instead endorsed Hurd’s primary challenger.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he was rescinding his backing of Hurd due to what he described as insufficient support for the administration’s tariff program.

“Based on a lack of support, in particular for the unbelievably successful TARIFFS imposed on Foreign Countries and Companies … I am hereby WITHDRAWING my Endorsement of RINO Congressman Jeff Hurd,” Trump wrote.

Trump announced he is now endorsing Hope Scheppelman, who is challenging Hurd in Colorado’s Republican primary scheduled for June 30.

Scheppelman thanked the president for his support, writing on social media that she aims to help Trump “repair the damage Biden and the Democrats did to our economy” and to continue efforts to make the country more affordable for working families.

Hurd’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump initially endorsed Hurd in October, praising him for supporting border security, military funding, energy policy and tax cuts. Hurd, who is serving his first term after winning Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District by five percentage points in November 2024, has since broken with Trump on trade policy.

In February, Hurd was one of six House Republicans who voted to terminate Trump’s tariffs on Canada. At the time, Trump warned that Republicans who opposed his tariff agenda would face political consequences, including primary challenges.

Following a Supreme Court decision Friday that struck down most of Trump’s tariff policies, Hurd defended his earlier vote, emphasizing Congress’s constitutional role in trade matters.

“I share President Trump’s goal of securing fair and reciprocal trade and protecting American industry,” Hurd wrote. “Tariffs can be a useful tool when applied strategically. But today’s decision underscores the need for Congress to play its proper role in trade policy.”

The endorsement reversal marks a notable escalation in the dispute between Trump and one of his own party’s first-term lawmakers as primary season approaches.
