Taiwan Urges China to Halt Military Operations, Citing Threat to Regional Stability

Taiwan called on China Wednesday to immediately cease military operations in nearby waters, accusing Beijing of undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and disrupting international shipping and trade.

In a statement posted on its Foreign Ministry website, Taiwan expressed alarm over the presence of a “large number” of Chinese naval and coast guard vessels operating in the first-island chain, a Pacific archipelago that includes Japan, Taiwan, and parts of the Philippines.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs solemnly demands that the Beijing authorities immediately stop military intimidation and all irrational activities that endanger regional peace and stability,” the statement declared.

Taiwanese defense officials reported sightings of Chinese ships since Monday, noting formations resembling “two walls” near Taiwan and along the first-island chain. Officials believe these maneuvers are intended to assert China’s territorial claims over these waters.

China had also restricted airspace off its southeast coast from Monday to Wednesday, signaling possible military drills. However, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has not confirmed any exercises.

The maneuvers are thought to be a response to recent stopovers in Hawaii and Guam by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te during an overseas trip. China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, opposes any official engagement between Taiwan and the United States or other foreign governments.

While China has not directly addressed the reported military activities, a government spokesperson reiterated Beijing’s stance online, stating that the country “will not tolerate provocations” by Taiwan in cooperation with external forces.

The latest developments underscore the growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a key waterway for global trade. As Taiwan continues to resist Chinese military pressure, the situation highlights the region’s delicate balance and the broader geopolitical implications of Chinese assertiveness in the Pacific.
