A man was arrested Tuesday after confronting Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis and attempting to spray her with a liquid substance, police said.
The incident occurred moments after Omar delivered remarks calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and urging the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Omar has faced frequent public criticism from President Donald Trump in recent days.
The suspect, identified in the Hennepin County Jail roster as 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak, was taken into custody on suspicion of assault. He has not yet been formally charged.
Witnesses said the man walked down the center aisle toward the stage and attempted to spray a liquid at Omar while appearing to shout, “You must resign.” A security guard quickly intervened and tackled him to the ground. An attendee was heard saying, “Oh my God, he sprayed something on her,” adding that the substance had a foul odor.
Local leaders who had spoken earlier at the event urged Omar to leave the room and seek medical evaluation. She declined, saying, “That is what they want. We will continue.”
The suspect was then removed from the venue by authorities. No injuries were reported.
