The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Governor of Nasarawa State, dismissing an appeal challenging his victory in the March 18 governorship election.
In a unanimous decision, the five-member panel ruled that the appeal lacked merit.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, delivering the lead judgment, stated that the appellant, Emmanuel David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), failed to provide sufficient evidence of over-voting and noncompliance with electoral laws.
The court upheld Governor Sule’s election, overturning the earlier decision by the Nasarawa Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which nullified the election and ordered a fresh Certificate of Return to the PDP candidate.
The Court of Appeal had, on November 23, reversed the tribunal’s decision, stating that it erred in concluding that Governor Sule did not win the majority of lawful votes in the election.
