Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has declared his support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general elections, even as he maintains his membership in the PDP.
Speaking to BBC Hausa, Lamido said his political stance would mirror that of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who remains in the PDP while openly backing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
His announcement comes just two weeks after Lamido and other senior PDP figures participated in a closed-door meeting of opposition leaders in Abuja, where a consensus was reached to adopt the ADC as the coalition’s platform to challenge Tinubu’s re-election.
While some pro-Wike PDP members have pledged allegiance to Tinubu for 2027, Lamido made it clear that his support would go to a candidate of integrity, regardless of party lines.
“Nigerian politics today is beyond party lines. It’s about finding the right person, not just a political party,” Lamido said.
He lamented the state of internal crises within political parties, blaming them on selfishness and hypocrisy, and criticized the PDP’s instability as a self-inflicted wound.
“The PDP’s problem is self-inflicted. But I’m not afraid of anyone. I will remain in the PDP and do my part to save the party,” he added.
Lamido reaffirmed his commitment to what he called the emancipation of Nigerian society, saying he remains focused on that mission whether from inside the PDP or by supporting the ADC’s presidential flag bearer in 2027.
His declaration signals a deepening political shift among opposition ranks, as prominent figures position themselves for influence in the next election cycle.
