State police have launched an internal investigation into the shooting incident involving Trooper Thomas Mascia along the Southern State Parkway last week.
On Monday evening, authorities announced that Mascia has been suspended without pay as the investigation progresses.
Investigators searched Mascia’s West Hempstead home on Sunday, two days after he was discharged from Nassau University Medical Center. The search aimed to secure Mascia’s firearms and any other weapons.
Mascia reported that he was shot by an unknown driver late Wednesday night, though the incident was not recorded on body camera. According to state police, the body camera automatically activates when the cruiser’s emergency lights are on; however, only Mascia’s rear emergency lights were activated at the time.
Officials also stated that they are no longer searching for a Dodge Charger with temporary New Jersey plates, which had initially been linked to the incident.
In a statement, state police confirmed, “An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting of Trooper Mascia on October 30. This investigation is ongoing, and further details are not available at this time.”
The Nassau County District Attorney’s office also issued a statement, noting they are examining “certain inconsistencies” in the reporting of the incident.
“My office, in collaboration with the New York State Police, is actively investigating discrepancies identified in the account of the shooting involving New York State Trooper Thomas Mascia last week on the Southern State Parkway. The investigation is ongoing, and further comment will be withheld until it is concluded.”
