South-East Lawmakers Urges Tinubu to Pardon Nnamdi Kanu

The South-East caucus of the House of Representatives has formally appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider granting a pardon to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that such a move could foster long-term peace and engagement in the region.

In a statement on Monday following a caucus meeting, the lawmakers noted that presidential clemency has historically been used to heal divisions and consolidate national unity. They cited Section 175 of Nigeria’s Constitution, which grants the President discretionary powers in cases where legal measures alone may be insufficient.

“It is our belief that an act of clemency by the President would resonate deeply across the country as a symbol of inclusiveness, fairness, and leadership that prioritises healing over division,” the caucus said. They added that a pardon would facilitate broader engagement between the Federal Government, elected leaders, and community stakeholders, helping to chart a sustainable and peaceful path forward.

The legislators highlighted ongoing social disruptions in the South-East, including closed markets, interrupted schooling, and reduced commercial activity, which they said have been exacerbated by Kanu’s continued detention.

“Beyond its political nature, this matter has taken a deep emotional toll on families, communities, and the general population,” the caucus stated, urging a political and humanitarian intervention to restore normalcy and reduce cycles of civil unrest.

The appeal follows the Federal High Court in Abuja’s November 20, 2025, sentencing of Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offences. Justice James Omotosho ruled that Kanu’s actions, including threats and sit-at-home orders in South-East states, constituted terrorism. Kanu’s legal team has indicated plans to challenge the judgment at the Court of Appeal.

While affirming respect for the judiciary, the caucus stressed that their appeal reflects the broader national and humanitarian implications of Kanu’s detention, urging President Tinubu to act in the interest of peace, unity, and social stability.
