Shittu Declares 2027 Oyo Gov Bid as Oyebamiji Enters 2026 Osun Race

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shittu, a seasoned lawyer and prominent philanthropist from Shaki in the Oke-Ogun region, is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1979. Widely recognized for his community service, he has championed ICT training programs and empowerment initiatives across Oyo State. During his tenure as minister under President Muhammadu Buhari, Shittu contributed to transformative achievements in Nigeria’s digital economy and communications sector.

In neighbouring Osun State, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji, has also announced his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election on the APC ticket.

Oyebamiji received endorsements from key political figures, including former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, former Commissioner for Information, Chief Sunday Akere, Commissioner for Water Resources, Raheem Tadese, and members of the Osun Progressives People’s Forum (OPPF). The endorsement event was held at the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Office in Osogbo.

Following the gathering, Oyebamiji and his supporters visited the APC State Secretariat to officially notify the party leadership, led by Chairman Tajudeen Lawal, of his ambition.

Addressing journalists, Oyebamiji emphasized his combined experience in governance and business, stating:

“I am the most qualified for the APC governorship ticket. I have spent nearly 15 years in government and 28 years in the private sector. With these, I believe I can run a good government.”

He also advocated for regional equity, calling on the APC to zone the 2026 governorship ticket to Osun West Senatorial District.

Speaking on behalf of the OPPF, Coordinator Wasiu Abiona described Oyebamiji as “sellable to the electorate,” citing his integrity, leadership record, and grassroots appeal. He explained that the forum was established three years ago to build political momentum across Osun’s voting units.

As the political landscape continues to shape ahead of the 2026 and 2027 elections, both declarations signal renewed energy within the APC and set the stage for keenly contested primaries in both states.
