Shettima Champions Tinubu’s Security Initiatives, Urges Regional Collaboration in Sahel

Vice President Kashim Shettima has highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security issues, with a particular focus on the Sahel region. Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Shettima emphasized the critical need for regional cooperation and joint efforts to tackle insecurity that affects both Nigeria and its neighboring countries.

Shettima lauded NAN’s forthcoming international lecture on Sahel security issues, noting its relevance. “The upcoming lecture by NAN is both timely and crucial, especially regarding the security challenges in the Sahel. President Tinubu is deeply invested in resolving these issues and is taking them very seriously,” he stated.

He expressed anticipation for the conference scheduled for September 25, 2024, which aims to offer fresh perspectives on addressing regional insecurity. The event will feature Mohamed Ibn Chambas, former Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission, as the keynote speaker.

NAN’s Managing Director, Ali Mohammed Ali, introduced the conference theme: “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024): Dissecting Nigeria’s Challenges – Genesis, Impacts, and Options.” Ali emphasized that the event reflects NAN’s commitment to national discourse and problem-solving.

Additionally, Ali announced several initiatives to enhance NAN’s operations, including the launch of a new Hausa portal for local broadcasting, the reopening of international offices, and expanded coverage across Nigeria’s 109 senatorial districts. He also revealed that President Tinubu is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Xinhua News Agency during his upcoming visit to China, which will bolster NAN’s international partnerships.

The meeting was attended by senior NAN officials, including Abdulhadi Khalil, Director of Administration; Muftau Ojo, Director of Special Duties; Ismail Abdulaziz, Deputy Director of Multimedia; and Ngozi Anofochi, Board Secretary.
