SGF George Akume Denies Interest in APC National Chairmanship

George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has debunked claims suggesting he is vying for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, Akume dismissed the speculation as false and a distraction from his responsibilities in the federal government.

“The attention of Senator George Akume has been drawn to a publication claiming he is among those jostling for the APC national chairmanship.
To the best of our knowledge, this is a fabrication meant to distract the SGF from his critical duties,” Odunuga stated.

Akume, a former Benue State governor and ex-Senate Minority Leader, reiterated his commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“His main focus is to ensure he does not in any way betray the trust that President Tinubu reposes in him,” Odunuga added.

Addressing the issue directly, Akume emphasized that he is not pursuing any party leadership role, stating:

“I am not in a race that I am not interested in.”

While acknowledging the possibility that the APC could zone the national chairmanship to the North-Central, Akume maintained that there are many qualified individuals from the region capable of taking on the role.

“I am a firm believer in the principle that whatever God plans for you will surely come to pass,” he said.
“Everything I have been in life has been given to me by God through the instrumentality of people, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Akume’s remarks come amid renewed speculation surrounding the leadership structure of the APC ahead of the party’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
