Senate Urges President Tinubu to Amend Bureau of Public Procurement Act

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to submit an amendment bill for the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Act to improve project budgeting in Nigeria.
Akpabio emphasized the urgency of this amendment to address the widespread issue of abandoned projects resulting from flawed budgeting processes.
During the inauguration of the 700km Lagos-Calabar N15 trillion highway project in Lagos, Akpabio highlighted that over 14,000 projects across the country have been abandoned due to inadequate and incremental budgeting for large-scale projects.
“A few days ago, we were debating and concluded that we must amend the BPP Act,” Akpabio stated. “A situation where you want to construct a road costing N500 billion but only allocate N2 billion this year means the job will take 50 years to complete. We must budget in a way that aligns with the tenure of the presidency and federal government.”
He stressed the need for an amendment to ensure that every project started is completed within a reasonable timeframe. “Mr. President, the executive must bring an amendment bill for the BPP Act so that we can ensure timely completion of projects. That’s our commitment,” Akpabio affirmed.
