Aryna Sabalenka showcased her dominance on Saturday as she convincingly defeated China’s Zheng Qinwen to successfully defend her Australian Open title, becoming the first woman in over a decade to achieve this feat.
In a commanding performance, the Belarusian world number two overwhelmed the 12th seed with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 76 minutes on Rod Laver Arena, clinching her second Grand Slam crown.
Sabalenka’s remarkable run at the Australian Open saw her secure the title without dropping a set throughout the tournament, solidifying her status as one of the game’s most consistent contenders at Grand Slams. The last successful women’s title defense at the Australian Open was in 2013 by fellow Belarusian Victoria Azarenka.
Reflecting on her triumph, Sabalenka expressed her elation: “It’s been an amazing couple of weeks. I couldn’t imagine myself lifting this trophy one more time and it’s an unbelievable feeling right now. I’m really speechless.”
Despite her victory, Sabalenka offered words of encouragement to Zheng, acknowledging the tough loss and highlighting the Chinese player’s potential for future success.
“I know this feeling — it is tough to lose in a final but you are such an incredible player, such a young girl. You are going to be in many more finals and you are going to get it,” she said.
Sabalenka’s dominance was evident throughout the match as she unleashed powerful groundstrokes and maintained a consistent serve, leaving Zheng struggling to match her pace and precision.
Despite Zheng’s efforts to mount a comeback, Sabalenka’s relentless pressure proved insurmountable, ultimately securing her 14th career title.
While Zheng faced disappointment in the final, her journey to the Australian Open showcased her potential, propelling her into the world’s top 10 when the new rankings are released next week.
Sabalenka’s triumph solidifies her position as a formidable force in women’s tennis, while her opponent Zheng emerges as a rising star to watch in future tournaments.
