Russia Launches Largest Missile Attack on Ukraine Since August, Killing Five and Targeting Energy Infrastructure

Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, targeting power plants and energy infrastructure in multiple regions, including the capital, Kyiv.

The assault, the largest since late August and the third biggest this year, forced residents into basements, subway stations, and underground shelters. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least five people were killed in the strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on Telegram as a “massive strike” affecting “all regions of Ukraine.” He said approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones were launched, with Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepting more than 140 targets.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia deployed advanced weaponry, including at least eight Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one Zircon hypersonic cruise missile, and over 100 Kalibr cruise missiles. The assault involved Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic bombers, as well as Su-34, Su-27, and MiG-31 jets.

Despite the intensity of the attack, Ukraine’s defenders downed 144 incoming projectiles, including 102 missiles and 42 drones, according to the air force.
