President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, ensuring the separation of powers, and respecting dissenting views, as long as they adhere to Nigeria’s legal framework.
This commitment was emphasized during the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Lagos, where Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered Tinubu’s message.
The President highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation through legal and judicial reforms, stating that his government has been prioritizing the independence and welfare of the judiciary since he assumed office.
Notably, he mentioned the recent signing of the Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances) Act 2024, which increased the remuneration of judicial officers by 300%. Tinubu also announced plans for a permanent building for the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.
Addressing the legal community, Tinubu called for unity and collaboration to build a Nigeria that fulfills the dreams of its citizens, urging a departure from ineffective past practices to achieve sustainable development. He assured the nation that, despite current challenges, his administration’s policies would soon bring relief and drive positive change.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), also spoke at the event, advocating for macroeconomic reforms and a new social contract to foster Nigeria’s growth. She emphasized the need for policy consistency and urged a diversification of the economy to extend beyond oil, focusing on sectors like agriculture and solid minerals.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State stressed the importance of the social contract in ensuring security and justice. He reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to transparent governance and the empowerment of women within the judiciary. NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) assured attendees that the bar would continue to champion justice and uphold the rights of the people, calling on lawyers to avoid corruption and serve with integrity.
The conference, themed “Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria,” gathered prominent figures, including former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and other distinguished legal and political leaders.
