President Bola Tinubu has called on the United Nations to consider debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing countries during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu emphasized the need for the UN to prioritize comprehensive debt relief measures, particularly from creditors and multilateral financial institutions, to promote sustainable economic development.
He stressed that developing nations, especially those in the Global South, require special concessions and a reexamination of their debt burdens to make meaningful economic progress. The president also urged for stronger efforts in recovering proceeds from corruption and illicit financial flows, noting that the repatriation of such funds is a key principle of the UN Convention against Corruption.
