At the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, President Bola Tinubu urged global leaders to embrace multilateralism and move away from protectionist policies to foster lasting peace, security, and stability. Representing ECOWAS as Chairman, Tinubu stressed that addressing global challenges like food insecurity and armed conflict requires partnerships rooted in mutual respect, fairness, and inclusivity.
He praised the African Union’s peace initiatives, notably the “Silencing the Guns” campaign, and lauded China’s efforts in promoting global peace and cooperation. Tinubu underscored the need for a reassessment of global governance and economic development strategies, advocating for cooperative approaches to ensure a secure future.
The President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing peace and good governance in West Africa, highlighting China’s role in Africa’s development through initiatives such as the Belt and Road and FOCAC. He emphasized addressing the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty and inequality.
Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s central role within ECOWAS, noting its transformation from an economic bloc to a regional security framework. He highlighted Nigeria’s multifaceted peace strategy, which integrates military, diplomatic, and economic measures, and assured continued efforts to bolster stability in West Africa.
